B BackgroundsAcute diarrhea is one of the most frequent gastrointestinal illness that affects travelers from industrialized countries visiting developing world. According to several studies, traveler’s diarrhea is influenced by various global factors with some of them are length of stay, age, and country of origin. Several studies have examined the epidemiology of traveler’s diarrhea but there is little prospective information on spectrum, the occurrence of accidents, and possible differences between tropical regions mainly in Indonesia as one of high-risk countries. The general purpose of this research is to find out the incidence of acute diarrhea, related to length of stay, age, country of origin among international travelers in Indonesia.MethodsThe study used an observational study with cross-sectional design in the center of international cultural association at Jakarta, Indonesia. Research data were collected by using primary data based on questionnaire interview that recorded length of stay, age, country of origin, and prospective information about spectrum and the occurrence of accidents of acute diarrhea among international travelers who visited or stayed in Indonesia. The data were analyzed by using SPSS version 21.0.Results76 international travelers were enrolled by using chi-square analysis and showed that prevalence of acute diarrhea was statistically correlated with length of stay (p=0,002), age (p=0,021), and country of origin (p=0,033) among international travelers.ConclusionThe prevalence of acute diarrhea is significantly associated with length of stay, age, and country of origin among international travelers.
